Africa Urban Lab at ASE Zanzibar Campus in the Works

The Charter Cities Institute (CCI) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) have joined forces to establish the Africa Urban Lab (AUL) at the new African School of Economics (ASE) campus in Zanzibar. This strategic partnership aims to deliver cutting-edge education, real-world training, and pioneering research focused on Africa's rapid urbanization.

The AUL will address the challenges and opportunities presented by Africa's projected urban explosion. The Lab's curriculum will explore innovative approaches to urban development, including the potential of charter cities and new city developments. The AUL's work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 for creating inclusive, safe, and sustainable cities.

A key aspect of this collaboration is the launch of educational programs at the ASE Zanzibar campus. These programs will feature experienced faculty, guest lecturers, and knowledge exchange opportunities. Apprenticeship placements will enhance practical learning for AUL students, while city leaders and urban professionals from East Africa can participate in specialized programs. The AUL will also host research collaborations, conferences, and workshops to foster policy discussions and share best practices.

This partnership between UN-Habitat, CCI, and ASE represents a commitment to fostering innovative urban education, effective urban planning, and sustainable urban development across Africa. By combining resources, expertise, and a shared vision, the AUL is poised to become a leading center for urban development research and education on the continent.
